The flow of the story is as follows: Thaniyandi (Sathish Kumar) and his wife Meena live in a village called Koviloor.He has four sons, who are all married except for the youngest, Muthu.Muthu falls in love with a girl, Janaki (Bhanupriya), and they get engaged. This angers Thaniyandi's second son Raghu who was also wooing Janaki, and he plots to break up their engagement by setting fire to their house. Muthu survives but Janaki passes away from severe burns. Heartbroken, Muthu asks his father to shoot him but Thaniyandi pleads with him to spare his life, refusing to become a killer.One day, the villagers accidentally burn Thaniyandi's newly purchased new motorcycle at the same time that Thaniyandi returns home on it.Thaniyandi is forced into action and joins a group of outlaws who roam through the countryside and rob people. He also takes Muthu under his wing and trains him in combat and marksmanship; Muthu proves to be an excellent fighter with a pistol. The group visits the city where Thaniyandi robs a bank for one of their members. While leaving the bank, he sees Janaki in the crowd and tries to approach her but is restrained by Muthu who believes that she is in league with criminals.Thaniyandi's family also moves to the city in order to find employment. His third son (Azhagam Perumal) gets a job as a police constable while the second son (Raghu) gets a job as an assistant to an area don named Vanna Vanna(Vadivelu). They are unaware of Raghu's real intentions, which are to seek revenge on the outlaws who set fire to his home. Vanna Vanna's rival in city is a man named Illango Gounder (Goundamani), who also has another assistant, the late Janaki's father, who is seeking revenge for his daughter's death. Thaniyandi and his son Muthu return to the village in the hopes of convincing Thaniyandi's third son to join them. Muthu convinces his uncle to join him in trying to stop Raghu from starting a gang war. On arrival they are shocked to find out that Thaniyandi is an outlaw too. They attempt to convince him otherwise but he refuses. Raghu, on the other hand, is able to kill Vanna Vanna after Thaniyandi interferes. Thaniyandi is arrested by the police and sentenced to life imprisonment.The story then moves 20 years into the future, where Muthu(Sathish) has grown up into a police officer. He is married to Janaki's daughter Thamara (Vijayalakshmi). Sathish tells his son Mano (Master Bharath) that he will visit his grandfather in prison on his birthday even though they have not spoken to each since he received his sentence.
